Idea of the Month - 2010

February

Heart to Heart

February is National Heart Month. It is the perfect time for readers to have a "heart-to-heart" with a good book.

Readers cut out a construction paper heart for everywhere "book with heart" that they read. They write their name, the title of the book, and why they loved the book or why it had heart. They can make a chain of all the "heartfelt" books they read this month.

What is a book with heart? Some possibilities include:
A book with the word heart in the title
BEAR OF MY HEART by Joanne Ryder
BURN MY HEART by Beverly Naidoo
HEART OF A SHEPHERD by Rosanne Parry
HEART OF A SNOWMAN by Mary Kuryla-Yelchin
HOPE IS AN OPEN HEART by Lauren Thompson
MAGIC BY HEART by Amy Gordon
  ONE HEART by Maryann Cocca-Leffler
A book with the word hart in the author or illustrator's name
  Chris Hart (drawing)
  Maud Hart Lovelace
  A book with the letters H E A R T somewhere in the title
EVERYTHING FOR A DOG by Ann Martin
HEROES OF THE VALLEY by Jonathan Stroud
THE NINE LIVES OF ROTTEN RALPH by Jack Gantos
THERE WAS AN OLD MONSTER by Ed Emberley, et. al.
WHERE THE MOUNTAIN MEETS THE MOON by Grace Lin
  An author/illustrator with the letters H E A R T somewhere in the name
  Katherine Paterson
  Amy Rosenthal

Have a heart-to-heart this month, and read a good book!

These ideas are intended to help readers share what they have read and enjoyed with other readers. Sometimes the strategies also help readers select the books they want to read next. They are easy to implement and appropriate for a variety of ages. You will find a new idea posted each month; some are appropriate for the particular month, most are appropriate at any time. Don't forget to look at ideas from previous months to help motivate your readers.
